The Craft Business Awards 2019 celebrate the best in the industry

By Mark Hayhurst 18 Feb 2019

All the best and brightest in the craft industry were celebrated at a special ceremony at the NEC.

The Craft Business Awards 2019 were presented at CHSI Stitches, the UK’s trade show for the creative craft industry, in Birmingham, on Monday, February 18.

The Awards, organised by Craft Business magazine, are the biggest and most well-respected in the crafting industry, celebrating everyone from small start ups to the giants of papercraft, knitting, stitching, haberdashery, beading, jewellery and creative stationery.

Mark Hayhurst, Craft Business editor said: “I am hugely impressed and inspired by this industry. From the smallest craft shop right the way up to the biggest chain store, this sector is driven by one thing: passion.

“The enthusiasm I encounter from every corner of crafts is seemingly boundless, so it’s been with great pleasure that I’ve been able to recognise some of this drive and devotion by overseeing the 14th annual Craft Business Awards.”

The 2019 incarnation has seen the addition of the Elite Industry categories. These new awards, which included Best Emerging Craft Band, Best Children’s Product, Best Craft Book and Best New Product, were judged by a star-studded panel of industry experts.

The judges included Dr Susan Kay Williams - Chief Executive of the Royal School of Needlework,

Sarah Hamilton - Founder of Just a Card, Haldi Kranich-Wood - Product Manager for British Wool, Linda Barker, Interior Designer and Television Presenter, Anthea Turner, Television Presenter and

Former-Blue Peter Presenter, Caroline Brooke - Buyer for Children’s Products at Hobbycraft, and

Debbie Bliss - Knitwear Designer.

The big winners in these categories were Rico Ricorumi, Lalylala’s Beetles, Bugs and Butterflies By Lydia Tresselt, Origami Dinosaurs By Lucy Bowman and Hawthorn Handmade.

Anthea Turner, commenting on the Best Craft Book winner - Lalylala’s Beetles, Bugs and Butterflies By Lydia Tresselt, said: “Pardon the pun but I was hooked from the moment I opened this beautifully crafted book. The first 25 pages are dedicated to the delightful story of a little crochet caterpillar who turns into guess what? A glorious Red Admiral butterfly with the remainder of the book showing how you can bring even more life to the story by making the creatures yourself.

“Everything about this book is enchanting from the wool interpretation of the characters to the clearly presented instructions. If you have never picked up a crocheting hook don’t worry Lydia has got you, and if you are proficient you’ll enjoy her world.

“I was taught to crochet at 11 by my Mum, then after the 70’s Poncho mania was over didn’t pick up a hook again until a few years ago.

“My belief is if the NHS handed out wool and hooks instead of valium we’d be a healthier far more chilled nation.”

The remaining categories were thrown open to the readers of Craft Business and thousands of votes were cast.

Best British Brand, Best European Brand and Craft Influencer of the Year were just some of the categories that saw neck and neck voting.
