Stylecraft launches new CAL with Jo Smith

By Mark Hayhurst 18 Jul 2019

Designer Jo Smith has created an exclusive Crochet Along for Stylecraft launching at the beginning of September called the Sun and Stars CAL.

Well-known as a regular contributor to UK crochet magazines with an exceptional eye for colour, Jo has designed a stunning blanket featuring bold graphic shapes set in harmonious borders.

She has put together two colourways called My Sun and Stars, using saturated colours of Batik and Life DK, and My Vintage, using delicate shades of Batik, Batik Elements and Life DK. There is a third colourway available called My Country Garden, which has been specially curated by Blogstar Heather Leal, from The Patchwork Heart using Special DK.

Jo begins her design process by surrounding herself with colour – sometimes up to 20 balls – arranging them until she has a shortlist of shades which she can start to crochet with.

The central motif in Sun and Stars was inspired by tapestry crochet as Jo explains: “I wanted to make a sunburst pattern. Then the triangles were added as an experiment and finally I softened the overall effect with circles which looked like more planets to me. The result is a wonderful blanket that reminds you of a stunning floor tile.”

The My Vintage colourway features less literal shades, reminiscent of a vintage tile or carpet. Jo said: “This is not my usual colour palette so it was both intriguing and exciting to challenge myself and extend my usual colour range. I love it.”

Heather from The Patchwork Heart explains how she came to her special colourway: “It has long been my dream to live in a cottage, growing flowers to fill jugs for my home. Picking shades for a colour recipe which evoked this dream, gave me weeks of pleasure, as I hooked these pretty shades together. It is my hope that crocheters too will have a wonderful adventure as they work with the My Country Garden colour recipe.”

The Sun and Stars CAL launches on September 3 on the Stylecraft website and runs for seven weeks.

Colour packs for all three colourways will be available through Stylecraft stockists from August 10 in yarn shops and from August 17 in online stores. Keep an eye out for details of the CAL group on Stylecraft’s social media.
