Free pitches for creatives at Westminster’s first ever Soho craft fair

By Mark Hayhurst 02 May 2019

Start-ups and local creatives are being offered the chance to launch their products in the heart of Soho at Westminster City Council’s first ever craft market.

New businesses are being given a free street trader pitch for the pop-up event at Berwick Street due to take place on Saturday May 18.

The aim is to give budding entrepreneurs an opportunity to run a market stall to see how it could work for their fledgling businesses.

It is part of the 2019 Love Your Local Market campaign, which highlights the importance that vibrant street markets have to their communities.

David Harvey, Westminster City Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Education and Skills, said: “As a local authority we appreciate our street traders and the markets and their work. They bring vibrancy and value to their local areas.

“In a recent survey carried out by Westminster City Council we were told by traders, residents and local workers that they wanted to see more and varied stalls.

“And with Love Your Local Market fortnight coming up, it is the ideal time to give potential new traders the opportunity to try it out.

“It’s a unique chance for businesses to have a platform to sell their products and get a taste of the market trading.”

So far several potential stalls have been confirmed including a designer outfitters and a new umbrella venture.

More than 900 people gave their feedback on what they wanted to see happen to Westminster’s markets over the coming months and years to reverse the long-term decline.

The top priorities for all parties were:

• The introduction of cashless payments and improved facilities

• Improved promotion of the markets, their traders and special events

• Diversity of stallholders and stalls

Anyone is welcome to apply for a stall but those with a strong Westminster connection will be given preference. If you are interested let them know by midday Friday, May 10 by emailing:

Please include your name, address, contact number, an outline of what the stall will sell, any connection with Westminster and if you are happy to appear in any publicity.
