Dawn Gehring, Creative Director and occasional crafts instructor for Therm O Web, offers tips for hosting a Halloween workshop
Halloween is one of our favourite holidays here at Therm O Web. It’s all about the fun of seasonal celebrations, with none of the stress that can accompany the winter holidays.
No holiday shopping list, no endless cooking, no long-distance travel – just fright, delight and treats! In that spirit, why not treat your customers to a Halloween party workshop this year? It’s an ideal opportunity to introduce new products and techniques within a festive, relaxed atmosphere. Hang some decorations, put on a spooky playlist, fill the cauldron with candy, and encourage customers to attend in costume for a chance to win prizes!
One of the most valuable workshop tips we’ve learned, courtesy of our friend and collaborator Gina Krupsky, of Gina K. Designs, is to “open a pack” when planning a demo project.
Gina designs a licensed range for Therm O Web that includes innovative stamping, stenciling, die-cutting, and foiling products under the Stamp n Foil, Stamp n Stencil, Foil-Mates and Glitz brands. She is also the owner of a successful brick-and-mortar retail store, Village Paper & Ink, in Greendale, Wisconsin.
Gina hosts a very popular weekly “Scrappy Hour” in her shop, inviting customers to come in for free card-making, refreshments, and live music. In addition to leaving with a finished card and ready-to-post envelope, her newsletter subscribers receive an exclusive ten per cent discount during Scrappy Hour if they mention the email invitation. It’s an event that her customers look forward to, week after week.
By opening a limited number of product packs from your inventory, and designing a simple project that maximizes those contents, you allow your customers to try the products and techniques in a way that encourages their confidence. Confident customers become repeat customers. To create the Halloween cards shown above, we used the following Deco Foil and Gina K. Designs for Therm O Web items to determine how many sample cards we could create:
- 1 package of Deco Foil Clear Designer Toner Sheets
- 1 package of Gina K. Designs for Therm O Web Fancy Foils
- 1 package of Deco Foil Foam Adhesive Sheets
- 1 package each of Deco Foil Flock Transfer Sheets: Orange Glow, Sunshine Yellow, Green Envy
These six packages of product will allow you to prepare for a minimum of 16 students, at a total wholesale cost of £17.72 or £1.11 per student. In addition, students will need the card bases, cardstock labels, and cardstock sentiments, plus access to adhesives, a hot laminator (to transfer foil), and a manual diecutting machine (to transfer flock).
In addition to the card project, be sure to share more ways they can use this concept to create dessert picks, goodie bags, gift tags, and decorations.
Deco Foil Clear Designer Toner Sheets are unique, pre-printed foilable designs that can be used with Deco Foil Transfer Sheets and a hot laminator to add colour and metallic shine to cards, layouts, shakers, and other papercrafts. Commercialgrade black toner ink reacts with heat to transfer foil in one step.
Deco Foil Transfer Sheets & Gina K. Designs Fancy Foils add vibrant color and metallic shine to a variety of projects. Use with Deco Foil Clear Designer Toner Sheets, Gina K. Designs Foil- Mates, or other Deco Foil adhesives on papercrafts, mixed media, home décor, and apparel. Ranges total 56 colours.
Deco Foil Foam Adhesive Sheets are a quick, easy way to transfer Deco Foil or Flock Transfer Sheets without heat. Deco Foil Foam Adhesive can be punched, die cut, or run through an electronic cutting system. Simply cut foam to desired shape, peel paper liner, cover with foil, and burnish with fingertips.
Deco Foil Flock Transfer Sheets add velvety texture and vibrant colour to projects without the mess of traditional flock powders. These unique flock sheets transfer to Deco Foil Foam Adhesive or Deco Foil Transfer Gel when using dies and stencils, but can also be used alone or with embossing folders.
