A brand new luxury, bespoke, yarn has been launched by shop owners Sharon Spencer, of Great British Yarns, and Carmen Schmidt, of A Yarn Story.

Walcot Yarns will make its debut at the upcoming Edinburgh Yarn Festival on March 10 and 11.

Schmidt said: “As yarn shop owners we’ve both seen a lot of yarn.

“There’s lots of great luxury yarns out there and lots of great workhorse yarns, but not many that tick both of those boxes, which is what we’ve tried to create with Walcot Yarns. That’s really the aim of Walcot Yarns, creating yarns which meet both those requirements.”

Walcot Yarns’ introductory line is Opus, a lush 4-ply blend of 70 per cent merino and 30 per cent baby alpaca that is both luxurious and hardwearing.
The natural shade of the yarn is either cream or grey, with the coloured shades dyed on the grey base to give the colours added depth.

The additional nine shades feature a gorgeous smoky undertone. A total of 11 shades will be available initially and each 100g skein yields approximately 325m.

A yarn perfect for year-round wear, Walcot Yarns’ Opus features a minimal halo with a lofty and cool handle that has a cashmere-like feel and can be worn next to the skin. Stitch definition is clear and crisp and
well-suited to cables and specialty stitches to create sumptuous textures.

Walcot Yarns’ first pattern collection On the Surface: A Study in Texture will feature nine designs from well- known UK designers Amanda Jones, Rachel Brown, Sharon Spencer and Jo Smith for both knitters and crocheters.

Following their debut at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival, Walcot Yarns will be available directly via the Walcot Yarns website (www.walcotyarns.com) or from A Yarn Story or Great British Yarns.

A full media package will also be available including mini skeins for swatching/sampling, colour cards and images.
